Donor steel

Donor steel is steel sourced from existing buildings and structures that are being dismantled or demolished. Instead of being remelted, this steel is reused in new construction projects. This preserves raw materials and significantly reduces CO2 emissions. Donor steel is an important component of circular construction and is increasingly requested by clients, governments and developers looking to achieve their sustainability objectives. The use of donor steel offers several advantages:

  • Significant CO2 reduction compared to new steel;
  • Higher circularity scores within projects;
  • Preservation of valuable raw materials;
  • Contribution to ESG and sustainability objectives;
  • Meeting increasing requirements from governments and clients.

More and more tenders include requirements for material reuse and circular construction. Donor steel offers a concrete solution to meet these requirements.

Circulairstaal® helps clients, developers and contractors in finding and applying donor steel. Thanks to our extensive network of demolition contractors, property owners, steel construction companies and other partners, we have access to available donor structures throughout the Netherlands. We guide the entire process, from inventory and technical assessment to engineering, logistics and reuse in new projects.

Circulairstaal® has already successfully applied donor steel in various projects. One example is the construction of a car park at Kennispark in Enschede, in which ParkingStaal® was involved. Here, existing steel structures were reused in a new parking facility. This project demonstrates that donor steel is not only a sustainable choice, but also an excellent one technically and economically.

Do you have donor steel available from an existing building, or are you looking for donor steel for a new project? Circulairstaal® brings supply and demand together and helps you to maximise the circular value of steel.
