Demountable construction with connectors

Demountable construction is a core element of the Circulairstaal® approach. We design steel structures based on the principles of Design for Disassembly (DfD), ensuring that buildings are prepared from the very first concept for disassembly, adaptation, and reuse.

Instead of permanent and irreversible welded connections, Circulairstaal® utilizes dry, demountable connections and smart connector solutions wherever possible. This enables steel components to be removed without damage and reused, either within the same building or in a new application. This approach not only enhances sustainability but also maximizes the lifecycle value of our structures.

What does Design for Disassembly mean at Circulairstaal®?

Design for Disassembly means that a steel structure is not designed as an end point, but as a temporary configuration of valuable components. At Circulairstaal®, we translate this principle into buildable and structurally reliable solutions.

This includes, among other things, that:

  • structures are composed of recognizable, independent components

  • connections are accessible and demountable

  • dimensions and detailing support reuse

  • steel components can be reinstalled without loss of quality

By applying DfD, steel remains part of a closed material cycle.

Smart connectors

as the key to demountability

Within Circulairstaal®, connectors are essential to our demountable construction approach. These connections enable the modular and reversible assembly of steel structures. Unlike welded joints, connectors allow components to be easily disconnected, offering numerous advantages:

  • increases building flexibility
  • shortened adaptation and disassembly times
  • limits material loss
  • Enhanced residual value of steel

This makes demountable construction not only technically feasible, but also economically attractive.

Modular steel structures with future value
Reusable building system

By combining demountable connections with modular design principles, a steel structure is created that can easily adapt to changing requirements. Expanding, downsizing, or repurposing a building becomes possible without major demolition or material loss. Circulairstaal® does not see steel as a one-time building material, but as a reusable building system. This directly aligns with circular ambitions, sustainability goals, and future-oriented real estate strategies.

Design for Disassembly and regulations

Design for Disassembly increasingly aligns with legislation and regulations surrounding circular construction. Demountability contributes to:

  • lower MKI values

  • improved MPG scores

  • demonstrable circularity within certification processes

  • Paris Proof construction toward 2030 and 2050

Circulairstaal® translates these policy objectives into concrete, buildable steel solutions.

Demountable construction with Circulairstaal® in practice

In practice, demountable construction with Circulairstaal® means that steel structures can go through multiple life cycles. Buildings remain adaptable, materials retain their value, and environmental impact is structurally reduced.

By combining Design for Disassembly, smart connectors, and modular designs, Circulairstaal® makes circular steel construction tangible, reliable, and scalable.

Demountable construction requires knowledge, experience, and an integrated design approach. Circulairstaal® is a frontrunner in this field by treating Design for Disassembly not as a theoretical concept, but as a practical foundation for future-proof steel structures.
